A cheap umbrella has a folding joint that gives way in the first real wind. Ours has a solid one-piece shaft and ribs of springy steel — it holds in a gust. We sew the canopy by hand and tension it so nothing flaps. If something breaks, we replace the part, not the whole umbrella.

You know a good umbrella only when the wind comes. I make them one at a time — from the frame to the tensioned canopy. I choose the wood and the fabric by how you'll carry it, not by the stock. A broken rib or a cracked handle I replace — an umbrella is not abandoned here.
